About Wendy Nixon Stothert
Wendy Nixon Stothert has loved playing and teaching music all her life. She started singing at a very young age and began studying piano at the age of 7. It was at her high school, Argyle Secondary in North Vancouver, that Wendy was first exposed to the Vocal Jazz idiom.
As a student of both Janet Warren and Frances Roberts, the provincially renowned Choral and Jazz educators and adjudicators, Wendy received a top-notch Vocal Jazz education. She earned a Bachelor of Education in Music from the University of Victoria in 1997 and has been a Choir and Band teacher at Secondary and Middle schools in the Comox Valley. A big fan of lifelong learning, Wendy consistently attends workshop and jazz camps like Brian Tate’s gospel week in Naramata, BC Swing Camp in Sorrento, and Centrum Jazz in Port Townsend, WA. The choirs have regularly participated in the Vocal Summit, a vocal jazz festival, in Powell River. Wendy is currently working on her Master’s Degree at Vancouver Island University, researching Music Performance Anxiety.
Wendy feels privileged to be singing with Swing Set, an a women’s jazz quartet, with Dale Graham, Jenn Forsland and Michelle Weckesser. She is preparing for her first night of solo vocal jazz performance with a fantastic rhythm section featuring Aaron Amar on drums, John Hyde on bass and Sean Mooney on piano.
Making music with the Just in Time Choirs is a dream come true for Wendy. She loves the vibrant interactions with the singers and instrumentalists and the thrill of hearing jazz harmonies come together. She firmly believes that everyone has a voice and that singing should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. By providing solo and small group opportunities in both rehearsal and performance settings, Wendy hopes to facilitate singers on their path to performing with excellence and confidence.
